The base observatory of Delhi, Safdarjung, recorded a minimum temperature of 5.3°C today. This is the lowest temperature for Delhi on 01st February since 2008 and therefore makes the coldest start of over a decade. Meteorological office at Lodhi Road was a shade lower at 4.6°C. Normal mercury level during the last days of January and first 5 days of February steps up to 9°C and goes in to double-digit anytime after the first week.
This gives a cold start to February and suggests chilly conditions to extend at least during the first half of February over Delhi. Prior to this, the coldest start was in the year 2008 with the mercury plunging to 4.1°C on the first day of the month. However a cold start for Delhi no way means that the temperature will be on the rise in the days to come. The temperature has a record of dipping further sometime during the first half of the month and invariably rise thereafter.
Delhi Minimum Temperature On 01st February(°C)
Since 2008, on 3 occasions the lowest temperature for the month of February was measured on 01st February itself (2010, 2011 and 2015). The lowest minimum temperature of 2.9°C in February since 2008 was recorded on 02nd February 2008. Delhi is likely to witness rain between 03rd and 05th February. The reversal of winds will raise the minimum to double-digit during this period. Dry and cold winds in the wake of the weather system will sweep again Delhi from 7th February onward and the minimum may drop to 5°C or less.
