Cold wave tightens grip over North India, no relief likely

January 12, 2017 11:40 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Cold wave has tightened its grip over plains of North India on Thursday as night temperatures continue to dip. The mercury which has been already settling below 5°C across Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh has plummeted further.

Few places have also recorded sub-zero temperatures, resulting in extremely chilly conditions across the northern plains.

Churu in Rajasthan is the coldest city of the country with night temperatures settling at -1.9°C, followed by Sriganganagar at -1.1°C.

Narnaul in Haryana and Amritsar in Punjab also continued with freezing temperatures at 0.5°C and 0.8°C respectively.

Night temperatures across rest of the places are also settling several notches below the normal average temperatures. These cold wave conditions have also extended over the parts of Central Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR as well.

All thanks to the uninterrupted flow of dry and cold northwesterly winds blowing directly from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh that has just recorded extremely heavy snowfall.

Moreover, Skymet Weather predict no relief during the next 24 to 48 hours as we expect that minimum temperatures may drop further. Thereafter, we can get some relief from the bone chilling weather on account of a fresh Western Disturbance approaching Jammu and Kashmir.

This system will break the flow of icy cold northwesterly winds which will be replaced by relatively warmer and humid southeasterlies. These winds will then increase the humidity levels, leading to increase in night temperatures.

Let us have a look at the minimum temperatures recorded across the northern plain on Thursday Morning:
