December 21, 2016 12:44 PM |

Kashmir snowfallCold wave gripped most parts of Jammu and Kashmir as the state marks the first day of ‘Chillai-Kalan’ on Wednesday.

Chillai-Kalan is a traditional 40-day long period of extreme cold weather that begins every year on December 21 and ends on January 31.

Temperatures are settling below the freezing point over several parts of the state. On Wednesday, Leh witnessed an extremely chilly morning at -15°C, while, Srinagar recorded -6.5°C, which was six degrees below normal

In wake of this, the famous ‘Dal Lake’ has already frozen partially, halting boating activities.

Now, weather conditions are indicating that cold wave will tighten its grip over the state as mercury may dip further during the next 24 hours. According to Skymet Weather, weather will continue to be dry and clear sky conditions will pave way for drop in mercury.

However, it seems that this season it will be a dry one. So far, the valley has not witnessed any significant spell of rain and snow. Moreover, we do not expect any fresh spell of snow in coming days as well.
