Cold wave likely to grip Plains of North India

November 18, 2016 11:13 AM |

Winters in India

As the winters are settling in over most parts of the country, temperatures have begun to plummet. In fact, parts of Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh are witnessing a drop in temperatures that are settling in single digits.

We can expect that during next few days, due to the continuous flow of cold and dry northwesterlies, temperatures may drop further thus leading to cold wave conditions at isolated pockets over the plains of North India.

Cold wave conditions prevail when the mercury dips by a few notches below normal mark. When the minimum temperatures settle below 10 degrees Celsius or more and also 5 to 6 degrees below their average temperature, then cold wave conditions are observed.

Now that minimum temperatures have already dropped 2 to 3 degrees at few places and are expected to continue to settle on the lower side, this may lead to cold wave conditions. Therefore we can expect cold wave to affect isolated pockets over the plains in another week or so.

In last 24 hours, the national capital Delhi has also witnessed chilly weather conditions. On November 16, minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 10.6 degree Celsius. Temperatures will continue to drop marginally in the coming days as well.
