Cold wave like conditions in Karnataka to abate next week

December 19, 2013 2:12 PM |

The cold wave like conditions in Karnataka are likely to continue for another two days and will begin abating as the next week begins. In Chitradurga, Hassan and Raichur temperatures have been recorded below normal by 3 to 5 degrees in the last 24 hours. The lowest temperature in the state was recorded at 11.6 degrees in Chitradurga, which was 5 degrees below the average for the month.

Cold and dry weather conditions in Karnataka have been persisting since 10th of December, the date on which 11 districts of the state recorded their lowest temperatures. Next day, on the 11th of December, four districts recorded their lowest minimum temperatures.

Unrestricted northerly winds that are penetrating Maharashtra (interior Maharashtra and Marathwada), Andhra Pradesh ( Telangana) and Karnataka ( north interior Karnataka) have led to the temperatures dropping in the last 10 days. Our weather models show no sign of abatement of the cold wave like conditions for the next 48 hours here.

The absence of a Western Disturbance which usually dominates the weather in India during this time of the year has failed to keep the northerly winds under check and therefore these winds have travelled to Karnataka and affected its weather.

On the other hand, lack of significant weather systems from the Bay of Bengal since Cyclone Lehar have not allowed the sea winds to become prominent and block the northerly winds. Winds associated with a weather system from the Bay of Bengal increases the night temperatures with the help of clouds and rain.

Weather in Bangalore

Night temperatures in Bangalore for the past two days have been cooler with minimums settling marginally below normal. The city recorded a minimum of 14.7 degrees on Thursday morning. and is expected to remain around 14 degrees for the next two to three days.
