Cold wave has tightened its grip over North India claiming at least 8 lives. Chilly weather prevailed across North India with the mercury dipping in several cities like Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Ambala, and others.
Moreover, widespread fog across the region reduced visibility thereby affecting movement of air, road, and train traffic. Fog-related accidents were also reported in different parts of the region.
As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, cold wave combined with cold day conditions have a severe impact as intense cold conditions prevail throughout the day without giving any respite for even a brief period. Additionally, the lack of proper sunlight only worsens the situation as even short spells of sunlight can be relieving.
Both the maximums & minimums in North India were recorded much below normal. However, a brief respite in the form of proper sunlight is expected in the next 48 hours. This shall lead to a marginal increase in temperatures across the region. The current maximums and minimums for various cities in the region are as follows:
Mostly homeless people are victimised by the extreme weather conditions. Lack of proper night shelters generally results in the poor and homeless getting exposed to the bitter cold. Each year hundreds die in North India due to severe weather conditions in winter.
