In wake of icy cold winds from Western Himalayas, Delhi and adjoining areas such as Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad have been witnessing below normal minimums since the last four days. In fact due to high speed cold winds, feel like temperature had remained much lesser than the recorded one in the last few days. This is due to intensified wind chill factor taking over the region. However, now with some systems developing, we expect a major change in these ongoing conditions.
A fresh Western Disturbance would soon reach Jammu & Kashmir. This system will induce a Cyclonic Circulation over West Rajasthan. Meanwhile, wind direction that plays an important role in governing the weather across the country would also become easterlies and south-easterlies soon. All these favorable conditions would block the cold winds from reaching Delhi NCR. Thus, both day and night temperature will witness a rise and soon touch the normal mark. Moreover, increase in temperature would provide relief to the residents in the form of abating Cold Wave conditions from the entire region.
Updated on January 28; Cold Wave in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad to last for another 48 hours
The national capital territory, Delhi NCR has been witnessing minimums hovering around 5°C or so against the normal of 8°C since last two days. As per Skymet Weather, such weather conditions are expected to last for another 48 hours.
Thereafter, there is a fresh Western Disturbance which would affect the hills and plains of the North January 30 onward. Also, there is a possibility of the minimums to drop by a degree or so on January 29 itself. Since, Delhi is on the periphery of this weather system, there are tentative chances of rains on January 30. With increase in humidity, the minimums might see a marginal rise. The clear picture would be out by tomorrow. However, clouding on January 30 cannot be ruled out. The reversal of winds will be witnessed during this time. On January 31, the minimums can oscillate between 8°C-9°C and eventually they would witness a rising trend, thus abating the Cold Wave condition over Delhi and NCR.
Delhi Winters So Far
This time, Delhi started to witness wintry conditions little late. Chill in the air wasn’t felt till mid of December. However, from second half of December till date, the national territory has been under the grip of chilly spells on intermittent basis.
Precisely, there have been four spells so far. December 20 onward, the normal minimums are around 7°C-8°C, wherein the minimums start with 8°C and then dip to 7°C. Till January 20, the minimums are around 7°C, thus it is safe to say that for almost a month the minimums are in and around 7°C. Then, post January 20, it again touches 8°C and thereafter it starts seeing a rising trend. By the end of month, i.e. January, minimums can be seen touching the mark of 8°C-9°C. Whereas, the first week of February usually records minimums around 10°C, thus touching the double-digit mark.
Delhi witnessed its first prolonged cold spell initiating from December 20, 2018 up till January 1, 2019 wherein the lowest minimum recorded for this season was during this spell at 2.6°C on December 29, 2018.
Next short spell was observed on January 10 and 11, 2019 and another one between January 16-18, these short spells dropped the minimums and settled them around 5°C.
After almost having a break of one week or so, for the last two days as well, the minimums are once again witnessing a downward track. From double digit of 10°C on January 25 to dropping straight by four degrees to 6°C, a successive drop is visible and continuing. On January 27 and 28, the minimums recorded are 5.2°C and 5.5°C, respectively.
Both, day and night temperatures are below normal from past three successive days. This season, dense fog has not been seen in large pockets. Only isolated pockets witnessed dense fog. By and large, it is safe to say that this time air, road and rail traffic were not much affected. It was only due to localized weather conditions that the modes of transport got affected.
