Cold wave grips Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh

Thick of winters have finally arrived over North India and that too with the bang. Mercury has plunged significantly during last 48 hours and is settling below five degrees over several places.

With this, cold wave has gripped many areas of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and parts of West Uttar Pradesh. Cold wave conditions are declared when the normal minimum temperatures for the plains are 10°C and they are settling below normal by 4 to 5 degrees.

Amritsar in Punjab recorded night temperature of 0.9°C, Karnal 1.6°C, Ferozepur 1.8°C, Pathankot 2.3°C, Chandigarh 2.4°C, Hisar 2.5°C, Ambala 4.4°C and Sirsa 4.6°C.

The ongoing chilly weather can be attributed to the icy cold winds blowing across the plains of North India. These winds are blowing directly from snow clad Himalayas in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Moreover, clear sky conditions and light winds are adding fuel to the existing weather conditions.

According to Skymet Weather, similar weather conditions are likely to continue for another 2-3 days. Thus, we can expect further drop in mercury across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi NCR and Madhya Pradesh in the coming days.

Thereafter, a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir by January 13. This will once again change the wind pattern to humid easterlies, which will in turn increase the minimum temperatures and cold wave conditions will abate.
