Cold wave-like conditions have engulfed several cities across the Indo-Gangetic Plains. Thick of winters is entrenching over North and East India as mercury has plunged 4 to 5 degrees below normal in cities like Hisar, Delhi, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Gaya, Patna and Ranchi.
The North Indian River Plain or the Indo-Gangetic Plain is a large fertile plain encompassing most of the northern and eastern states of India. The most populous parts of Pakistan, southern parts of Nepal and virtually all of Bangladesh also come under its purview. In this article we will only take into account the Indian cities observing below normal temperatures.
Hisar
Night temperature in this city of Haryana is at 6.8°C, which is 4°C below normal. In fact, Hisar has been observing single digit minimums since more than a week now.
Delhi
Delhi has recorded single digit temperature in nine days of November. This trend was last witnessed in November 2003. On Tuesday morning, minimum was 4 degrees below normal at 8°C in the national capital region.
Even though urbanisation has snatched most of the city’s charm, winter in Delhi can still be referred as pristine!
Lucknow
Lucknow experiences cool and dry winter months with thick fog paralysing the morning hours. Presently, Lucknow is the coldest at 5.9°C but fog has yet not affected the city. Winters here can be bone chilling as well therefore, carrying thick woollen clothes while visiting Lucknow during winter is absolutely essential.
Gorakhpur
8.3°C was the minimum temperature in Gorakhpur today morning. Minimum plunged 5 degrees below normal as a cold snap is prevailing here since the last few days.
Gaya
A cold wave swept across Gaya in Bihar as well. Minimum temperatures have been gradually dropping here but the night temperature plummeted sharply on Tuesday and came down 5 degrees below normal to settle at 8.4°C.
Patna
Since the last one week, minimum temperatures in Patna have been slipping steadily. From 13°C the minimum settled at 10°C on Tuesday morning, which is 4 degrees below normal
Ranchi
Similar weather conditions are prevailing in Ranchi as well. The city is witnessing cold wave like conditions with minimum settling 5 degrees below normal at 9.5°C on Tuesday morning.
