Cold wave continues in Himachal Pradesh and parts of Jammu & Kashmir

February 17, 2014 7:16 PM |

Night temperatures are significantly below normal in Himachal Pradesh and some parts of Jammu & Kashmir. According to our forecast, minimums would continue to remain below normal in these parts due to melting of snow in the hills and the prevalence of icy northerly winds.

In Himachal Pradesh, minimum temperature recorded in  Keylong monday morning was -17°C, seven notches below the normal while Manali recorded a minimum of -6.6°C, five degrees below normal. Kalpa in the state recorded a minimum of -7°C, four notches below the normal while, capital Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 0.2°C, three degrees below normal.

Similarly, Jammu observed a minimum temperature 5.4°C on Monday morning, five degrees below normal while, the summer capital Srinagar recorded -3.3°C, three notches below normal. Kupwara recorded the night temperature at -3.8°C, four notches below normal.

The other Himalayan state Uttarakhand also observed below normal night temperatures at most of the places. The capital Dehradun recorded the minimum temperature at 4.4°C, three notches below normal while, night temperature in Mukteshwar on Monday dropped to -3.2°C, five notches below normal. According to our forecast there will not be any significant rise in the night temperatures in these states during the next two days and the cold wave will continue in these parts.

However, an extended weather forecast suggests some rise in minimums in these parts only after a fresh Western Disturbance arrives by the weekend. Till then snowfall will be observed at isolated places in the hills and the weather will remain mostly dry.
