The spell of rain that began around February 26 and lasted for almost one week in North India, hugely impacted the weather in the region. The hills along with the plains are recording below normal temperatures at the moment. In fact cold wave conditions (night temperatures below normal by at least 5 degrees) are prevailing in the hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir recorded -10°C as the night temperature on Tuesday morning, which is 6 degrees below the normal average for the month. Pahalgam too saw the minimum settle 5 degrees below the normal average at -7.4°C. The state capital Srinagar is also witnessing cold wave like conditions as the minimum settled at 4 degrees below the normal average at -0.5°C.

Similar situation is prevailing in the neighboring state of Himachal Pradesh. In Keylong the minimum on Tuesday morning settled at a freezing -12°C, which is 7 degrees below the normal average. Cold wave like conditions are also being observed in Kalpa, Kullu, Manali and Chamba.

The cold and freezing conditions are however, going to improve for the next two days. During this period we can expect clear skies with ample sunshine in both the states. This will help in pushing up the temperatures and providing relief to the people battling cold wave.
