Since the passage of the last western disturbance on 22nd -23rd January, the weather conditions have remained completely dry in the northern plains and mostly inactive in the mountains, too. The persistent flow of cold winds down the slopes of snow-clad hills has resulted in a significant fall in the night temperatures. Cold wave conditions have prevailed for the second consecutive day over parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Even, the minimum temperature has dipped significantly over the national capital, as well.

The cold wave conditions are declared in the plains when the minimum temperature is 10°C or below and is 4.5 notches less than the normal for two consecutive days. Cold waves are also announced when the minimum temperature drops to 4°C or less in the plains. It is the second criterion, wherein the temperatures have breached the 4°C mark at many places.

Yesterday, Sikar in Rajasthan nearly froze by registering a minimum temperature of 0.5°C, the lowest of this season in the northern plains. In Punjab, many stations have recorded temperatures between 4°-5°C. Amritsar-4.1°C, Bhatinda-4°C, Firozpur-3.5°C, Jalandhar-4.1°C, Patiala-4.8°C, Pathankot-5°C. In Haryana too, Karnal and Narnaul registered lows of 4°C and 2.4°C, respectively. Similarly, East Rajasthan has gone down the threshold mark at places like Sikar-2°C, Alwar-3°C, Churu-3.9°C, Pilani-4.5°C. Accordingly, cold wave conditions have been prevailing over a large area.

Three western disturbances are likely to approach the Western Himalayas in quick succession, between 29th-31stJan, 01st -02nd Feb, 03rd -05th Feb 2025. The last of these systems is likely to be the most active and supported by an induced cyclonic circulation. It will impact the hills and plains, simultaneously. The second western disturbance will largely affect the mountains and the peripheral effect will influence North Punjab and the foothills. The first system between the 29th and 30th of January will keep the weather activity confined to the mountains. However, with the appearance of cyclonic circulation over Punjab and Rajasthan,  the wind pattern will change anytime soon. The minimum temperature will start rising tomorrow onwards and is unlikely to drop till the completion of the weather activity, right till the middle of next week. So, the mercury levels are expected to ease out for the next one week, albeit with gradual increments. Cold wave conditions will abate together, from most parts of North India.
