Cold wave abates Northern plains of India for now

In the recent past, many parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi along with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh were reeling under cold wave conditions due to extreme low temperatures. Temperatures reaches sub-zero degree Celsius which is not a frequent site in Northern plains.

But now as a cyclonic circulation has formed over Punjab and western disturbance has approached over Jammu and Kashmir which has increased the cloud cover over Northern plains. Temperatures have increased by 4-5°C in last 3 days.

Like Amritsar on January 12 recorded chilly minimum temperature of 0.8°C and shot up to 4.6°C today morning. Similar was with the case of Ludhiana that recorded minimums of 1.7°C on January 12, 2017 and witnessed 5.7°C morning. Temperatures in Meerut in last 24 hours shot up from 3.1°C to 6°C.

Churu in Rajasthan had recorded -1.9°C on January 12, 2017 but today morning 5.4°C. Hisar in Haryana recorded 1.1°C on January 13 and now the minimum temperatures settle at 4.6°C. Narnaul in Haryana witnessed bone chilling temperatures of -0.5°C on January 12, 2017 has the current minimum temperatures of 3.5°C.

So as of now we can say that the cold wave conditions prevailing over many parts of northwestern plains has now abated. Now due to significant increase in minimum temperatures, the ongoing severe winter conditions have eased up.

As the icy cold winds have been cut off and back to back western disturbances are expected to continue therefore we do not expect the night temperatures to fall significantly over all these areas. As January progresses the normal temperatures will also keep on increasing therefore we can say that severe winter will not make a comeback as of now.
