Cold Snap To Continue For Delhi, Thick Fog To Remain As Well

Some parts of Delhi/ NCR received a very light rain-drizzle, last night. Base observatory Safdarjung recorded trace rainfall and airport observatory Palam completely missed the sprinkle. The meteorological office at Lodhi Road measured 0.5mm rain and Noida also had similar weather conditions. The strayed cloud patch moved away and weakened further over West Uttar Pradesh. This spell of rain, albeit very light, patchy and fleeting was in defiance of the numerical models and was least expected.

In the wake of this spell, dense fog enveloped many parts of the capital and suburbs in the morning. The cold breeze also raised the chill factor and feel like temperatures were nearly 3-4°C below the actuals. Safdarjung recorded the minimum of 8.3°C and Met Office observatory clocked 7.4°C. Ridge, in central Delhi, was the lowest with 6.4°C, about 3°C below the normal.

The day started with dense fog in pockets. A layer of fog has thinned down with horizontal visibility improving beyond 500 mtrs. However, the sunshine will remain dim and gloomy. The day temperature may not rise adequately and the capital may still register another cold day today. Foggy mornings with the sting of chill are likely for the next 3-4 days. Republic Day festivities will proceed under the shadow of freeze and obscured conditions. The minimum temperature is likely to drop by about 1-2°C tomorrow and the day after. The maximum temperature may also get arrested at 16°C today.
