Cold day conditions to abate in North India; fog to make entry

December 15, 2014 4:11 PM |

The Western Disturbance and cyclonic circulation helped give rain and snow in most parts of North India during the weekend. Shimla and its adjoining areas received first snowfall of the season, while Delhi Punjab and Haryana observed some decent rain.

The two-day wet spell brought cold day conditions to North India by pulling down the maximums by 6-7 degrees. Shimla recorded 2.4°C as the maximum temperature on Sunday, which is 10 degrees below the normal average. Kullu saw the maximum settle at 1°C which is a whopping 17 degrees below the normal average. Both the places had observed snowfall on Sunday. Mukteshwar in Uttarakhand recorded 4.5°C as the maximum, which is 10 degrees below the normal average.

The situation in the plains weren’t good either. Amritsar in Punjab recorded 16°C as the maximum on Sunday, which is 6 degrees below the normal. State capital Chandigarh saw the maximum settle at 14.7°C, which is 7 degrees below the normal average. In Ludhiana the day temperature settled 5 degrees below the normal to recorded 15.6°C.

Haryana too observed similar weather conditions with Ambala observing the day temperature settle at 15°C, which is 7 degrees below the monthly average. Rohtak and Karnal are some other places in the state that witnessed maximums settle 8 and 6 degrees below normal, respectively.

The national capital Delhi also observed rain and cold winds that brought down the day temperatures to 16°C on Sunday, which is 7 degrees below the normal average. The diurnal variation in the city was as low as 2 degrees, while on an average it was 5-6 degrees. The lesser the variation the colder the weather feels.

However, with the passing away of the Western Disturbance and forecast of clear skies, cold day conditions will improve. The maximum temperatures across North India will rise, while minimums will witness a drop, which will make the nights and early morning hours cold.

Fog, a common feature during this time of the year will make an entry in the next two days. The conditions - high humidity levels and cold dry northwesterly winds – at the moment are apt for the formation of fog across north India including Delhi.
