Coastal Karnataka to continue with heavy Monsoon rains

West Coast and Northeast India are major rainfall contributors during the four month long period of Southwest Monsoon. These two areas are the wettest pockets across the country between the months of June and September.

In fact, out of the above mentioned regions, Coastal Karnataka receives the most amount of rains during Monsoon. Places including Honavar and Mangalore have four digit monthly average rains. After the onset of Monsoon, Coastal Karnataka receives rain of varying intensity.

Also, geographically, Coastal Karnataka lies at the ideal height of the Western Ghats, which is why the region receives continuous Monsoon rains throughout the Southwest Monsoon season. This year too, Southwest Monsoon has remained active to vigorous over Coastal Karnataka.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Mangalore recorded a good 61 mm of rain followed by Honavar and Shirali where 58 mm rains were received. Other areas to have received rains include Karwar 53 mm and Panambur 49 mm rain.

These rains can be attributed to the off shore trough which is running along the West Coast. Also, a cyclonic circulation has formed over Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast which will further enhance rainfall activity over the region.

Now, Southwest Monsoon will remain active to vigorous over Coastal Karnataka. During the next few days, moderate to heavy rains will continue over Coastal Karnataka. Some regions may receive rainfall in three digits as well.
