Nagpur 1

The state of Maharashtra as a whole has been witnessing dry weather conditions. So much so that the maximum temperatures have been settling well above the normal levels particularly over Vidarbha. In fact, the residents of Vidarbha as well as Marathwada have been witnessing very warm days.

During the past 24 hours, Buldhana recorded a maximum of 34°C, which is five degrees above the normal level. Likewise, Akola registered a day temperature of 35.5°C, which is four degrees above the normal. Meanwhile, Yeotmal recorded a day maximum of 33.5°C and Beed 34.4°C, both being three degrees above the normal level.

For Vidarbha and Marathwada regions, weathermen expect medium to high clouds to persist until February 9. With this, day temperatures will plummet by 1 to 2 degrees. Moreover, scattered rain and thundershowers, with heavy falls at few places are possible over the regions between February 10 and 12. These showers are expected to be accompanied with hailstorm and strong winds.

These showers could be attributed to the confluence zone that is expected to develop over Vidarbha. The humid southeasterly winds from Bay of Bengal and southwesterly winds from Arabian Sea will amalgamate over the region, leading to the development of clouds.

Normally, rains are not very common at this time of the year over Maharashtra. Thus, the approaching rains will be an unusual affair for the state, both in terms of intensity and magnitude. With the cloud cover and upcoming showers, day temperatures are expected to drop. Right now, the maximums are hovering around mid-30s; this will lower down and settle near high 20s to near 30s.

At this juncture, let us take a brief look of the effect of weather on the agriculture:

Farmers of Vidarbha and Marathawada are advised to take care of the mature and harvested crops in the wake of approaching rain and hailstorm activities.

They are highly recommended to complete the harvesting and threshing of Jowar crop and store the harvested produce to a safer place. Similarly, if Chana crop has reached its physiological maturity, then, we suggest the farmers to harvest the crop and store it at a risk free place.

Lastly, due to the persistence of cloud cover, farmers are requested to monitor Wheat crop carefully for pest infestation.
