Cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir; 1 killed, 3 reported missing

On Thursday, July 16, a cloudburst struck near Sonamarg on the Srinagar-Leh road in Jammu and Kashmir. According to media reports, a girl has been killed and 4 people have been reported missing. Two houses have also been damaged and several vehicles have been washed away in heavy rains.

The cloudburst struck the area at around 7:00 pm near Gagangir at the Kellan village. After the incident, the Srinagar-Leh highway was closed. Four Spaniards who were staying close to the area where the incident took place have been evacuated safely.

Meanwhile, the holy Amarnath yatra has also been halted due to bad weather conditions in the area. Both the routes have been closed and no yatri will be allowed to move any further till the conditions improve.

Also, landslides have occurred in the area, however, the civilians have been accommodated by the army in transit camps. A bridge caved in on the Baltal-Amarnath yatra at Sheshnag. No casualties have been reported in this incident. Heavy rains also washed away a bus with no one on board.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the Western Disturbance which is over Jammu and Kashmir is expected to give moderate to heavy rain in the region for next 24 to 48 hours. Thereafter, light rain will continue over the region till July 20.

During this period, Himachal Pradesh will also receive good amounts of rain. Uttarakhand will receive light to moderate rain during the next 2 days. The intensity of rain will reduce over the three hilly states as the Western Disturbance will move away from the region by July 20.
