Amidst the ongoing rains in the Northeast India, it seems like Arunachal Pradesh is bearing maximum brunt of the weather. Recently, a cloudburst was reported in the Bomdila town in West Kameng district which was accompanied by a hailstorm.
The torrential rain triggered landslides and flash floods in the town. The heavy downpour continued for about an hour. Damages have been reported to the main road to the town as well as some government buildings. However, there is no report of human casualties as of now.
The restoration work is already in process as the rain intensity has come down a little.
A rare phenomenon in the India region, Cloudbursts are normally observed during the Monsoon season over the hilly terrains of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
This happens when warm air mixes with the cool air mass to develop thunderclouds over an area located at some height.
In India when the hot air from Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea moves towards the Himalayan region, it mixes with cool air mass, leading to thundercloud formation.
If this happens over a valley, the thunderclouds get trapped and thus pour all over the same area in a very short span of time, which in turn leads to torrential rains.
This may result in flooding conditions accompanied with hail and heavy thunderstorm. If the rain over the valley is more than 25 mm, it is categorized as a cloudburst. The rains might even reach 75 mm or more at times.
