Churu in Rajasthan achieves the feat of being coldest place over Pan- india plains. Churu, the Gateway to the Thar desert slipped in to single digit minimum temperature on 17th Nov 2022 ( 8.2deg), the coldest place in the plains. The place continue to run this spree for over 2 weeks, barring one day break on 28th Nov, when Hissar in Haryana became marginally colder than Churu by registering a low of 6.3 deg as against 6.5 deg of Churu.
Between 17th Nov and 02nd Dec, Churu also recorded the lowest minimum of 4.1deg on 24th Nov, amounting to cold wave conditions over the district. Today morning, Churu measured a shivering low of 5deg, about 3deg below the average at this time of the season. Under the influence of western disturbance passing across the mountains of North India, further fall may get arrested and it may even rise marginally. Mercury is expected to dip once again from 05th Dec.
East Rajasthan and South Haryana generally go the coldest from mid November till end of December. Prominent places like Hisar, Narnaul, Churu, Sikar and Pilani figure among the coldest over plains of North India during this period. Post snowfall in the mid reaches of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, the coldest belt shifts to Punjab and North Rajasthan. Snowfall over Srinagar, Manali and Shimla and rainfall over plains of Punjab and Haryana is followed by plunge of mercury levels to low single digit across the region. Invariably, Amritsar, Firozpur, Fazilka, Jalandhar, Adampur , Hissar, Ganganagar and Suratgarh get listed among the coldest places for rest of the winter season.
No active western disturbance is likely in the next one week. Weak systems will move across the mountains between 05th & 06th Dec and 08th & 09th Dec. An active western disturbance is expected around 11-12 Dec. This is likely to trigger weather activity, initially over the hills and later follow over foothills and plains of North India.
