December 25, 2020 8:30 AM |

cold wave in north India

The cold wave has further tightened its grip across most parts of North India. Christmas eve is poised to be chilly, though dry in the plains of Punjab and Haryana. The abnormal freeze will extend covering parts of north Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. 25th December, X-Mas day will be sunny and dry with marginal changes in the night temperature.

Malwa region of Punjab and the northern parts of Haryana have been the coldest in the past 24 hours. Firozpur, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Ludhiana, Karnal, Hissar and Kurukshetra are bracing the cold with under 5°C temperature. Ludhiana, the industrial city of Punjab nearly froze recording 2.1°C, this season’s lowest temperature so far. Ludhiana seems to be colder than Amritsar (4.1°C) and Jalandhar ( 4.0°C) which is a reversal from the normal over the region.

Western disturbance is approaching on 26th December largely affecting hills. This weather system will induce a cyclonic circulation over Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and Delhi which is likely to persist till 28th December and gradually shift eastward. There will be thin cloud cover on 26th and 27th December, consequentially raising the minimum temperature by 2-3°C. Dense fog is likely at many places during this period and sunshine will be restricted. Similar conditions are expected till new year eve with no likelihood of weather playing spoilsport.
