Chilly winter in India approaching, lowest minimums recorded for this season

December 13, 2013 1:50 PM |

It is another chilly day for the country as the mercury dropped to the season's lowest yet in several places today. The plains and lower hills including Srinagar at (-3.5⁰C), Pathankot at 5.1⁰C, Jammu at 6⁰C, Jamshedpur at 9.2⁰C and Jodhpur at 10⁰C, recorded the lowest minimums. Both Pune and Nasik in Maharashtra recorded 7.4⁰C. Amritsar and Dehradun showed a significant drop from 7.4⁰C on Thursday to 5⁰C and 6.5⁰C, respectively. Even Ramagundam in Andhra Pradesh came down below double digits and settled at 9.4⁰C.

In view of fairly good and persistent north westerly winds, fog could not engulf the northern plains; visibility was good and weather remained clear in the morning hours. The national capital adorned a deserted look last evening as chilly winds blew over the region, forcing people to stay indoors. Maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi are near normal at 9.7⁰C and 23.8⁰C, respectively.

The maximums in the northern plains, which were hovering around 25⁰C last week have now come down in few places of Punjab. Day temperatures in Amritsar, Patiala and Bhatinda recorded 22⁰C. The only station in the northern plains to record below 20⁰C this season is Pathankot at 19.9⁰C

We are just about reaching normal temperatures and beginning to enter bone-chilling winter in India. We can expect marginal variation in the next 24 hours depending solely on wind patterns, in the absence of any rain or snow. This, however, does not mean that temperatures will maintain because the actual pace setter of the winter season is snow and rain, which is yet to happen in good amounts.
