After the end of rain in the plains and snowfall in the hills, the outbreak of icy winds is now seen in the plains states of North India. In Punjab, Haryana, North East Rajasthan, Western Uttar Pradesh and the national capital Delhi, day temperatures have witnessed a sharp drop in several places during the last 24 to 48 hours. The maximum temperature in most cities was recorded at 5 to 10 degrees Celsius below normal, leading to cold day conditions during the day.
On January 10, Palam in the capital Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 14.2 degrees Celsius, 6 degrees below normal. Similarly, the temperature in Safdarjung was 16.2 degrees, 4 degrees below normal.
Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh recorded a maximum temperature of 14.8 degrees Celsius, 7 degrees below normal.
In Punjab, the maximum temperature in Amritsar was recorded 6 degrees below normal at 12 degrees Celsius, Bathinda recorded 7 degrees below normal at 14.4 degrees Celsius, Chandigarh recorded 8 degrees below normal at 12 degrees Celsius, Ludhiana recorded 4 degrees below normal at 13 degrees Celsius, Pathankot recorded normal 13.6 degrees below normal at 8 degrees Celsius, and Patiala recorded 12.5 degrees below normal at 6 degrees Celsius.
In Haryana, the maximum temperature in Ambala was recorded 6 degrees below normal at 12.2 degrees Celsius, Karnal recorded 6 degrees below normal at 12.2 degrees Celsius, Narnaul recorded 5 degrees below normal at 15 degrees Celsius, and Rohtak recorded 6 degrees below normal at 13.5 degrees Celsius.
Churu in Rajasthan recorded a maximum temperature of 14.8 degrees Celsius, 7 degrees below normal.
The current weather conditions will persist until at least 14–15 January 2021, so that the effect of icy winds will continue despite the sunny day. A similar drop in day temperature will persist in the plains states of North India. The minimum temperature is also expected to fall further in the cities of the plain of North India including the national capital Delhi. Gradually, the effect of these northwest chill and dry winds will reach eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and a drop in day and night temperatures will also be recorded in these areas. In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the maximum temperature remained above normal for the last three-four days for Lucknow, Kanpur, Banda, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, and Bahraich, due to which the weather like March was being felt here.
