Unlike Christmas, hills of North India are likely to miss white New Year. Though weather models were earlier indicating of snowfall but the prevailing Western Disturbance is travelling in higher latitudes and moreover, it is not as active as the one during the Christmas.
Hence, weathermen predict that system would not result in any significant rain and snow across Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on December 31 and January 1. Popular tourist destinations such as Shimla, Manali, Srinagar and other places will have to settle with cloudy sky and chilly weather.
According to Skymet Weather, the present Western Disturbance is seen over North Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir and is travelling in higher latitudes. This system is only expected to bring light rain and snow on the weekend and that too over the higher reaches only.
Few places in Uttarakhand may receive scattered rain and snow on the New Year Eve but this snowfall will not be significant as the Western Disturbance is not active.
However, another Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir during the first week of January. The system will be active in nature and is expected to give good rainfall over all the three hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
