Chilly weather awaits New Year in Northern Hills; light snow in higher reaches likely

Despite the fact that the country is inching closer towards year end and December is just about to end, winter chills have remained absent from most parts of North India. The northern hills of the country have also failed to witness much snowfall this year.

According to Skymet Weather, the present Western Disturbance is seen over North Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir and is traveling in higher latitudes. Hence, this may fail to give any significant rain and snow across Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on December 31 and January 1.

This system is only expected to bring light rain and snow on the weekend and that too in the higher reaches of hilly states only. Particularly, the state of Jammu and Kashmir will have to wait for a few more days to witness snowfall which is predicted to fall between January 3 and January 7 as a result of an active Western Disturbance.

Popular tourist spots like Shimla, Manali, Srinagar and other hill stations will have to settle with cloudy sky and chilly weather only. But, a few places in Uttarakhand may receive isolated rain and snow on the New Year’s Eve.

In a nutshell, those who missed the snowfall this month and especially during Christmas will miss the same during New Year as well.
