The northwestern plains of the country were reeling under the dry weather for the last couple of weeks. The westernmost state of the country, Rajasthan was also witnessing similar weather conditions as rains remained absent from the state for almost a month.

However, the weather scenario changed yesterday as rains appeared over the desert state. In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Pilani and the capital city Jaipur received light rains to the tune of 2.1 mm and 2.4 mm, respectively. Along with the rain, hailstorm was also observed in parts of Jaipur during the past day.

These showers began to drench several parts of the state since Monday night and continued throughout Tuesday. Though the rains remained confined to the northern and eastern parts of the state, the intensity of the rains remained light.

According to Skymet Weather, the Western Disturbance affecting the Western Himalayan region had induced a cyclonic circulation over North Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana and Punjab.

The combined effect of the above two weather systems resulted in widespread rains over parts of Rajasthan. However, as the weather system was a fast-moving one, rain belt soon moved eastwards, leading to a significant reduction in the rainfall activity and dry weather thereafter.

In the wake of these rains, the minimums scaled up marginally, bringing in the much-needed respite from chilly nights, however, the day temperatures witnessed a fall by 5-6 degree Celsius.

But soon after the passage of the weather system, the northerly winds from the snow-clad Himalayas returned to the region, resulting in a dip in the night temperatures. Further, night temperatures are likely to drop further and chilly nights to make comeback again.

On the other hand, clear sky and bright sunshine would lead to rising in the day temperatures. Moreover, as moisture has increased due to the rains, moderate to dense fog is likely to return over North Rajasthan.
