Chhattisgarh gets first rains of the season, ending month long dry spell

February 14, 2018 1:00 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Chhattisgarh witnesses less activity in terms of rain and thundershowers during the winter months of January and February. The reason behind this is that the region lies little beyond the reach of the weather systems traveling across the central parts of the country.

In general, most of the weather systems move across North India, covering right from Rajasthan to Uttar Pradesh and even up to Bihar and then later travel along the Himalayas towards Nepal and Tibet.

Chhattisgarh and adjoining regions usually receive rainfall activities when an active Western Disturbance and its induced cyclonic circulation forms and penetrates across northern parts of the state. However, the southern parts of the state remain immune to such systems.

A similar thing happened during the last 24 hours as well, when the combination of multiple weather systems had formed over the region, resulting in widespread rainfall activity. One was the passage of active Western Disturbance across Western Himalayas that was traveling in an easterly direction. The other was the confluence zone that formed over the region due to the amalgamation of the humid winds coming from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.

Within a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Bilaspur recorded 22.8 mm of rain, Ambikapur 16.6 mm, Mana 15 mm, Rajnandgaon 14 mm, Raipur 13.8 mm, Durg 13.4 mm and Pendra registered 12.4 mm of rains.

Such a situation is not very common for the state and Chhattisgarh seldom experience such weather conditions in the entire season. In fact, these showers are the first rainy spells for the state this season.

The state had been witnessing dry weather conditions since January. Against the state’s normal rainfall of 15 mm for the period from January 1 to February 10, Chhattisgarh has been 100% rainfall deficient.

However, the last 24 hours proved to be a miracle for the state as most of the districts recorded rains. In fact, most of the places have either recorded rains lose to their respective monthly normal or exceeded the mean.

As per Skymet Weather, the weather would now clear up and fair-weather conditions are expected to prevail over the state. The rainfall activity would take a backseat during the afternoon hours. Thereafter, rains are not likely to make a comeback for at least the next one week. In wake of this, the day temperatures would now start rising again.

The state of Chhattisgarh is located in the central region of the country, more oriented towards the north-south direction between longitude 18°N and 24°N.

Moreover, the southern parts of the state are in proximity to the Bay of Bengal, however, they are far from the eastern coast of the country. Thus, the weather of the state is largely influenced by the winds coming from the Bay of Bengal. On the contrary, the winds from the Arabian Sea do not impact the weather conditions of the state much.
