Extremely heavy rainfall continues over Meghalaya, particularly Cherrapunji and Mawsysnram. Seems like, these two places are maintaining their reputation of being the top two rainiest places in the world.

Now, the axis of the Monsoon trough is running close to the foothills of the Himalayas. Moreover, there is a cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and adjoining Bihar region. These weather systems will further enhance rainfall activities over Northeast India including Meghalaya.

Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall will continue over the region for the next 2 days.

So far, Cherrapunji has received 2385 mm of rainfall. In fact, the monthly average rainfall in Cherrapunji is 2992 mm.

The highest 24-hours rainfall in Cherrapunji is 776 mm, which was recorded on 8 July 2014. On 15 July 2012, this place had recorded 543.2 mm. Such records confirm that Cherrapunji indeed receives very heavy showers during the Monsoon season.
