Cherrapunji exceeds monthly average rainfall in just 10 days

Cherrapunji has received bountiful rainfall in just the first 10 days of June. The rainfall has been so intense that it has already crossed the monthly average of around 2500 mm in just 10 days into June. The rainfall total has reached around 3000 mm and with more than half of the month remaining, Cherrapunji could receive record breaking rainfall in June.

This is only the third instance that the 3000 mm mark has been breached in the last decade. The other two instance being in the year 2010 and 2012 where around 3340 mm and 3445 mm of rainfall was recorded respectively. The record breaking rainfall was last observed in 1966 when the city received a whopping 5832 mm of rain. The annual average rainfall for Cherrapunji stands at 11,619 mm.

The topography of Cherrapunji makes the place conducive for heavy rainfall. Cherrapunji is around 5000 feet above sea level which is perfect for formation of heavy clouds resulting in heavy downpours. As moisture laden winds rise along the slope in this region, there is good condensation and therefore we get heavy rainfall in Cherrapunji. The Monsoon 2015 has already hit the region. This is the time of the year when the Monsoon is very active in this region.
