In Chennai, weather becomes quite pleasant in the months of January and February. Minimum temperatures hover around 21°C and maximums around 29°C.

A warmish feeling with good sunshine prevails in afternoon hours. However, weather can be a bit uncomfortable in the afternoon. Winds coming from the sea make the evening and early morning hours pleasant.

Peninsular India receives good showers in the Southwest Monsoon season, but Tamil Nadu remains devoid of any major rain activity. This could be attributed to its geographic location. The state does not receive adequate rainfall during the active Monsoon phase, as the Western Ghats block the flow of Monsoon air, giving all the rain to Kerala. In absence of rain, weather remains mostly hot and humid from June to September.

Tamil Nadu lies in the rain shadow area and gets more than 70% of its rainfall from Northeast Monsoon in the winter months. November is the stormy season and not palatable due to rains and inclement weather conditions. Rains start easing out in December, starting from the northernmost parts of Tamil Nadu. Average rainfall of 200 mm in December falls sharply in January to 22.5 mm. Only token rainfall is observed in the month of February and rains cease to play spoilsport.

Chennai usually does not witness any fog but sea fog makes frequent appearances only in the months of January and February. Other places in Tamil Nadu including Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore and Salem also witness weather conditions similar to Chennai throughout the year.

Deep-rooted traditions make Chennai the cultural capital of India. This charming city is a true reflection of the country’s diversity. The city is an amalgamation of modern technology and traditional arts. If you still haven’t visited this buoyant metropolis, good weather conditions during the next two months could be an added incentive to plan a trip.
