Chennai to witness light rains

Monsoon rains are expected to make a comeback over Chennai, which has been mainly dry and humid for the past many days.

As reiterated by Skymet Weather, a low pressure area can be seen over west-central Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh coast. Also, a trough is extending from coastal parts of Tamil Nadu. In wake of this, the city has already recorded very light rainy spells. In addition to this, we can expect on and off patchy light rains and thundershowers over the capital city during the next 24 hours as well.

As per weathermen, now this system is likely to move inland and will bring light to moderate showers over North and Northwest Tamil Nadu including Chennai. Humid weather conditions will persist over the southern parts of the city for the next 2 to 3 days. However, rains will not be heavy and widespread in nature and many places will get only short spells of rain and thundershowers.

So far, Chennai has recorded mere 24.7 mm of rain against its monthly average of 140.4 mm of rain. However, with these rains approaching, we expect situation to improve up to some extent.

At present, the cumulative rainfall deficiency for Tamil Nadu stands at 4%, which is almost normal. The state including Chennai has not recorded much rain during the Southwest Monsoon as it falls under a rain shadow region.
