With the monthly average of just 3.5 mm of rainfall for March, rain in Chennai during this time of the year is no less than a wonder. But Chennaites can smell the petrichor soon enough with fair amount of rainfall heading there way.

At present, a trough is running Comorin area to South Chhattisgarh across interior Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and Telangana. This trough has already lashed good amount of rainfall over many parts of the state. Karaikal received hefty sum of rainfall of 171 mm, this was the maximum amount of rainfall in the span of 24 hours for the region. The weather conditions were cloudburst like condition.

This ongoing trough is expected to bring in scattered rains over many parts of Tamil Nadu. But this rainfall activity will hit less areas of North Tamil Nadu which includes Chennai.

Being on the north coast of Tamil Nadu rain activity will be much less over Chennai for now. But we expect few good spells of rainfall by the end of this week around March 10 & 11. Though the month of March is not known to shower god rains over Chennai, but meteorologists at Skymet Weather expects that this rain activity which is expected to continue for next few days will help the city surpass the average.

This month of March, rainfall is expected to be much better for Chennai compared to last year.
