For a long time now, Chennai has been witnessing hot and dry weather conditions. The reason for this prolonged dry spell can be attributed to the absence of any significant weather system over the region.
Only on one occasion, the city had recorded 0.1 mm of rains that to on May 17. Due to this, even though Chennai is a coastal city, the temperatures continued to settle at more than 40°C.
In the last 24 hours also, the maximum temperature recorded in Chennai was 39.2°C. Warm and humid weather has been prevalent over the region, leading to discomfort and uneasiness among the locals.

The reason for these hot and humid weather conditions in parts of Chennai can be attributed to the dry and warm westerly winds that were blowing across the region.
However, as per Skymet Weather, light to moderate rains are expected over the interior parts of Tamil Nadu in next 24 hours. Isolated thunderclouds may also develop in parts. These showers can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation over Rayalaseema and a trough is also extending from this system up to South Tamil Nadu across western parts. In wake of this, day temperatures are likely to witness a drop, however there will be no respite in the discomfort levels due to excessive humidity. Thus, Chennai will remain dry for now.
