Chennai to get moderate showers, may cross monthly rain average soon

Chennai received 5mm of rain during the last 24 hours. In fact, many coastal districts of Tamil Nadu have recorded moderate showers with one or two heavy spells. This on and off rain activities are expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Rainfall over interior districts of Tamil Nadu will be isolated and light.

By January 5th, a trough is expected to extend from, in the area to North coast of Tamil Nadu, leading to an increase in rain activities. Between January 5th and 7th, Chennai may receive few moderate to intense spells. By end of this week, the monthly rain average of Chennai which is 25.9 mm will be achieved. Day temperatures are expected to remain below normal but minimums will be marginally above normal. We do not expect flash floods or water logging which may disrupt normal day to day life. Traffic jams and local waterlogging cannot be ruled out.

By January 7, the weather of Chennai will clear up but rains may continue over Southern districts of Tamil Nadu thereafter as well. These rains will be beneficial for the upcoming crops and restoration of water level. During Northeast monsoon, Tamil Nadu received 6% surplus rainfall whereas the South Peninsula remained surplus by 15%. Winter season also commenced on a rainy note which is a good sign for Tamil Nadu.
