The recent cyclonic storm Vardah gave heavy rains over the city of Chennai along with many other regions of the North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh. Wind speed of 110 kmph was recorded in Chennai with few areas receiving rainfall of 145 mm in the span of mere 3 hours.

Post Vardah, another fresh weather system showed up as a low pressure which was bound to give good showers over Chennai but that doesn’t seem to be the case now. The weather system as a low pressure changed its course and moved in a west-southwest direction.
This system is now heading towards south coastal Tamil Nadu, and will give heavy rains over Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Shivganga, Nagapattinam, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli. But that doesn’t mean that Chennai will be spared of any weather activity.
Isolated rains may occur over Chennai today. The intensity of these rains will be light when compared to the travesty that Cyclone Vardah created.

As the weather system has moved towards Southern Tamil Nadu, the threat of heavy rains over Chennai has reduced. In the light of this, the on-going fifth cricket test match between India and England will not be affected as the possibility of rain on December 20 is very slim. Chances of short spell of light rain are possible with very short delay in the game.
