Parts of Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu have been observing intense heat for the last few days. Some places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have seen the day temperature settle close to 47°C. While many places in the region have recorded season’s highest maximums.
Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu is one such city in the region where the maximum temperature settled at 42.4°C on Monday, which is 4 degrees above normal and highest of the season so far. The last ten year record of highest maximum in the city is 43°C, witnessed on May 16, 2007. While the all-time high is 45°C, observed on May 31, 2013.
Till May 16, Chennai was witnessing comfortable weather conditions as the maximums were settling in the lower 30s. A continuous spell of rain from May 10 to May 16 was also observed in the city, which kept the temperatures under control. But from May 17 onward, a spell of dry weather descended upon Chennai and day temperatures began to shoot up.
However, Tuesday (May 26) could be the last day of the month when Chennai will record above normal maximum. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, there is a trough forming over coastal Tamil Nadu, which will start giving light scattered rain in the region from May 27 onwards. This spell of rain will help in bringing down the temperatures close to normal.
According to Tamil calendar, May 4 to May 28 is Kathiri Veryel (Agni Nakshatra), which is considered as the hottest period in Tamil Nadu.
