These rains have been attributed to the low-pressure area which is persisting over the Bay of Bengal. The low-pressure area was persisting over Southeast Sri Lanka coast which is far away from Chennai. Intense spells of rains which occurred during the night time were attributed to the convective cloud build up.

Rains were light until the evening hours and heavy showers only occurred during the late-night period.

Now, the weather system is expected to move in a westward direction due to which significant decrease in rains is likely. However, as the easterly winds are still strong over Tamil Nadu coast, chances of short spells which will last for one or two hours cannot be ruled out over Chennai. However, heavy rains are ruled out over Chennai for at least the next few days and only light to moderate showers will be seen.
