Chennai receives first spell of Monsoon rains in JulyChennai rains displayed a good performance in the month of June. So much so that the city recorded a whopping 113.2 mm of rainfall against its monthly average of 55.9 mm. However, after recording good rains on June 29, Chennai rains took a backseat.

During the first week of July, Chennai remained dry with no sign of rain. However, rains have finally made a comeback over the capital city of Tamil Nadu. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Chennai recorded a good 18 mm of rain.

These rains can be attributed to the fresh weather system which is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal. Under this system’s influence, a fresh Monsoon surge will be initiated over the Bay. Light to moderate rain has already been recorded over many areas in North Tamil Nadu.

Now, during the next 24 hours, Chennai and its adjoining areas are expected to continue receiving light rainfall. There may be a marginal dip in the temperatures as well resulting in some relief from the prevailing weather conditions.

Chennai lies in the rain shadow area and receives most of its rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon season. However, the city still receives more rains in July than it does in June. The monthly average of June is almost half as compared to July.

In fact, after the month of December, three digit monthly average in Chennai is observed in the month of July. Thereafter, the capital city records three digit rains on a monthly basis throughout the year.
