Chennai rains

After the withdrawal of Northeast Monsoon by December end, rains practically get over for the cultural capital of South India, Chennai. Pre-monsoon showers over the city, recommence in April. The city waited long to receive lavishing showers and finally turned pleasant with intermittent rain and thundershower last evening/night. The official observatory Nungambakkam recorded 9 mm of rain. This also broke the jinx of a prolonged dry spell of 65 days.

April also is not the rainiest month for Chennai and it receives a meager 14 mm of rainfall during the month. Many a time, even these scanty rains give the city amiss. Last four years in a row, from 2016 to 2019, April scored a ' duck' disappointing wishful spirits of Chennaites. These showers provided some relief from the hot and humid conditions.

Now the city is likely to take a break and the second spell of showers is possible only after one week or so. Sultry conditions are likely to emerge again and the day temperature is going to hover around 35 degrees for the next few days. Interior parts of Tamil Nadu will continue to receive rains in the next 24 hours.
