Chennai rains are all set to revive this weekend, ending the prolonged dry spell. The state capital has been highly rain deficient ever since the beginning of the month. All thanks to the absence of significant weather systems in or around the city.
Now, a fresh system has developed near the city which would bring good rain and thundershowers over the city along with other parts of Tamil Nadu. According to Skymet Weather, a trough of low has formed over South Andaman Sea, which will gradually become more prominent and shift towards Tamil Nadu coast. Due to this, easterly wave will also become prominent.
This will lead to scattered rain and thundershowers initially over South Tamil Nadu on January 20. Rain belt will further cover parts of north coastal areas including Chennai by January 21.
Chennai will start witnessing cloudy sky conditions Friday onwards, with chances of isolated rain during late evening or night hours. Intensity increase considerably by Saturday and city will record light to moderate rains and thundershowers.
By January 22, weather will go dry but sky conditions will remain partly cloudy. But this doesn’t seem to be the end as another spell of rain is expected by January 25 or 26, wherein many districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai will record good rain.
So far, January has remained practically with Chennai recording mere 0.1 mm of rain against the monthly normal of 22 mm. January is also considered to be one of the rainiest month as several weather systems such as low pressure areas, cyclonic circulations or trough of low keep forming over southwest and southcentral Bay of Bengal.
However, Bay of Bengal has not witnessed much of these systems this month. Moreover, the few which have formed were not active enough to bring rain over the region.
