Chennai rains to return by December 14 with fresh low pressure in Bay

Chennai rains have been disappointing this year and the city is battling high rainfall deficiency this Northeast Monsoon season. After remaining dry for last few days, rains are likely to make a comeback soon.

According to Skymet Weather, a fresh Low-Pressure Area has developed over south-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean. It is likely to get more marked and would intensify further into well-marked low pressure area soon. Thereafter, chances are bright that system might induce a depression during the next 48 hours.

The low pressure area is tracking in west-northwest direction towards Tamil Nadu coast. As the system nears, we expect scattered rains to commence over Coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai  around December 14.

As per weathermen, these on and off rains would continue until December 16. During this time, we also expect a few moderate spells of rain. Isolated places in Chennai may receive heavy rain as well. By December 17, this weather system will finally move away towards northwest leading to a significant decrease in rain activity.

Due to these rains, the temperatures over Chennai will drop significantly leading to comfortable day conditions all over the city.

This would be the second good spell of rains during the month of December after December 3 when Chennai had received good rains.

By the end of this rain episode, weathermen at Skymet Weather expect that Chennai would be able to reach near to its monthly average rainfall of 177 mm. So far, the city has recorded 72 mm of rain. With Northeast Monsoon in active phase, there are chances that rains might even surpass the monthly average by the end of the month .
