Chennai rains to remain less intense until December 3

Chennai rains have been playing the freak show and the no show game for quite some time now. So much so that there have been days when the city of Chennai has recorded a whopping three-digit rain while there have been others where rain activity remained completely on the back foot.

The last 24 hours were on the no rain side as both the observatories of Chennai did not even record trace of rainfall. While the southern parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed a few moderate spells of rainfall, the northern parts of the state remained dry.

At present, the low-pressure area over South of Sri Lanka and adjoining areas has intensified into a well-marked low pressure and moved slightly westwards. The system is expected to further move towards Comorin region.

In view of these weather features, the afternoon hours will remain warm and mostly dry. However, due to the Northeast Monsoon, northeasterly winds are expected to strengthen over the North Tamil Nadu and Chennai area. Due to this, thunderstorm or thundershowers may occur towards late evening or night.

Thus, during the next 24 hours and even thereafter, Chennai will witness some rains and thundershowers. However, these rains are not expected to be heavy in intensity.

Around December 3, heavy Chennai rains are expected to revive as a fresh low pressure area is expected to form in the South Andaman Sea by tomorrow. The system has the potential of intensifying into a depression as well. The system is expected to move towards North Tamil Nadu which is why heavy showers will occur over Chennai.
