October is the second rainiest month for Chennai, with November being the highest. Going by this, rains started picking up pace with the beginning of the month itself. However, October is known for large variation in the rainfall.
While Minambakkam Observatory has recorded 250 mm of rain so far in the month, Nungambakkam has received 145 mm of rain during this. The normal average rainfall for state capital witnesses for October stands at 316 mm of rain.
Till now, October has performed well in terms of rain in Chennai, wherein the city managed to record few heavy spells as well. But the city has remained dry for the last 2-3 days and weather forecasters do not foresee any activity in the next few days as well. One or two spells of light rain or thundery activity cannot be ruled out on account of localised development.
According to weathermen, rains might only return after some days, around the arrival of the Northeast Monsoon over the region around the weekend.
Northeast Monsoon is the rainiest season for the city, wherein Chennai records more than 60% of its annual rainfall during the season. The season is three-month long that spans from October to December.
Although there is no fixed date for the onset of Northeast Monsoon, but it usually sets in around October 20.
