Chennai Monsoon rains to make a comeback

July 13, 2016 9:00 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Monsoon rains have been far and few over Chennai in the month so far on account of the subdued Monsoon conditions. However, the state capital is now all set to welcome good Monsoon showers.

According to Skymet Weather, the east-west trough with three cyclonic circulations embedded over it, is now expected to move northwards towards the foothills of Himalayas during the next 24 hours. It is likely to run closer to the foothills at least for next two days.

This will pave way for a cyclonic circulation that is likely to develop over Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh Coast. Thus, weather conditions will become conducive for the city to witness some good showers.

We can expect light rains to start making appearance over the city from the late evening hours of July 14. Thereafter, intensity of rains will increase July 15 onwards, where we can expect light to moderate Monsoon rains over several parts of the city but these showers will be patchy in nature.

The wet spell is likely to continue for three days till July 17.

So far, Meenumbakkam Observatory has recorded mere 21 mm of rain, while Nungambakkam Observatory has reported nil rainfall. The monthly average rainfall for the month also increases considerably in July and stands at 100.3 mm.
