With December being one of the driest months for the state of Tamil Nadu, the on and off spells of rain over the southern state has raised hopes for a good rainfall. And not just the interior parts of the state will get good rains, the state capital Chennai along with Pondicherry will get good rains in the coming weekend.

These rains can be attributed to the fresh easterly wave. A trough of low is expected over southwest Bay of Bengal along with Tamil Nadu coast. This weather happening will increase the cloud cover over the coastal parts of the state. With cloud cover and moisture laden winds, rain activity can be expected over the area.

By the night of January 20 rain will commence over coastal Tamil Nadu and by January 21 many districts of interior Tamil Nadu will also start receiving rainfall. But rains in interior districts will get scattered light rain. There may be a gap of 24 hours where rains will go dry.

Around January 23-24 light scattered rain is possible over the entire region. Normally rainfall over Tamil Nadu during the month of January is 22.2 mm. So such spells of rain are not uncommon for the state. But in February there will be a steep fall in rainfall as the average rainfall for the February is just a mere 2.3 mm.
