Courtesy low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal (BoB), the northeast monsoon activity has picked up over the South Peninsula. During the last 48 hours, heavy rains have lashed South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Kavali, Nellore, Ongole, and Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh and Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Tambaram in North Tamil Nadu have received widespread rainfall with heavy downpours at some places. Puducherry has received 121.8mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Chennai-encore registered 55mm of rainfall during this period. However, Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam witnessed light to moderate showers.
The danger of heavy rainfall for the capital city Chennai is not yet over. The cyclonic circulation of low-pressure areas persists over the region. A north-south trough continues to extend from Coastal Tamil Nadu to west-central BoB. These systems are likely to move westward, across Tamil Nadu and Kerala and sail over Lakshadweep and Southeast Arabian Sea. These winter monsoon systems have the legacy of leaving a trail of weather activity in the rear section of the primary feature, as well. Accordingly, the weather activity gets extended, even after the passage of the core system.
Fairly widespread rain and thundershowers are likely over the city and suburbs for the next four days, between 13th and 16th Nov 2024. The spread and intensity will be relatively greater on 15th and 16th Nov. Mostly light rains will continue the next day and on 17th Nov. Weather conditions will improve substantially on 18th Nov. The Break in the north monsoon activity will last for about four days, till 21st Nov. The weather activity is likely to get revived, once again, over the next weekend.
