As reiterated by Skymet Weather, Chennai rains are likely to commence anytime soon. Rain bearing clouds have been hovering over the city since the late Friday afternoon and showers are likely to follow any moment.
Live status of Lightning and rains over Chennai:
Weathermen predict one or two short spells of rain and thundershowers over Chennai and suburbs. However, intensity of rain will not be much and may be confined to light showers only.
Nearby areas of the city have already recorded some good rains. Cuddallore has recorded 17 mm of rain in span of three hours from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, followed by Karaikal 5 mm, Tirupathi 2 mm and Trichu and Puducherry 1 mm each.
Ending the prolonged dry spell, finally recorded light rains and thundershowers on Thursday. Nungambakkam Observatory recorded 5 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, while Minambakkam Observatory received 4 mm.
These ongoing rains have reduced the day maximums, paving way for pleasant weather conditions. However, levels of humidity have been high that may cause little discomfort.
Further, weathermen predict light showers to continue for another 24 hours. According to Skymet Weather, the trough of low continues to prevail over Southwest Bay of Bengal, off the Sri Lanka coast. This weather system is likely to remain active and will continue to give weather over Tamil Nadu including Chennai.
The state capital has remained mainly dry for almost entire month till yesterday. So far, the city has recorded mere 5 mm of rain against the monthly average rainfall of 22.5 mm.
January is also considered to be one of the rainiest month as several weather systems such as low pressure areas, cyclonic circulations or trough of low keep forming over southwest and southcentral Bay of Bengal.
However, Bay of Bengal has not witnessed much of these systems this month. Moreover, the few which have formed were not active enough to bring rain over the region.
