Chennai rains to continue for another 24 hours

The capital city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai recorded its heaviest rain spell for the Northeast Monsoon season yesterday. Beginning from Wednesday evening, Chennai witnessed non-stop rain for 30 hours. In fact, Nungambakkam Observatory recorded 94 mm of rain, while Minambakkam received 87 mm.

Now in the last 24 hours also, due to the presence of a low-pressure area over interior parts of Tamil Nadu, light to moderate rain and thundershower activities with strong winds were experienced over Chennai and its adjoining areas.

In the span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Chennai’s Nungambakkam Observatory recorded 12.3 mm of rain and Chennai’s AP Observatory recorded 16.9 mm of rain.

Now as this same weather system has weakened and moved westwards, the trough of low is extending from Comorin region to South Andhra Pradesh.

Therefore, due to presence of this system, light to moderate rainfall activity will continue to effect over parts of Chennai during the next 24 hours as well.

Thereafter, rains will decrease significantly and day temperatures over Chennai region will start to increase after 24 hours.

Moreover, due to these ongoing good rains over Chennai, the seasonal rain deficiency of the capital city may also decrease to some extent.
