It’s been long since Cyclone Roanu moved away from the proximity of Chennai. Since then the city has not received any rainfall. The major spell of rainfall was witnessed on May 20. Temperatures have been gradually increasing since then. So much so that day maximums have already crossed the 40-degree mark.
On Wednesday, the mercury had reached 41 degree Celsius. Sultry weather conditions will continue for next two days. Thereafter, pre-Monsoon activity will commence along the East Coast including Chennai.
Though the intensity of rainfall will not be too high but we can expect some rains over the city. Rains will commence during late night or early morning hours and will be short-lived. Night temperatures may fall but no significant decrease in maximums likely.
Showers will not be widespread and only few places will receive rain. By May 30, again weather will turn dry. Hot and humid weather will resume. Day maximums will remain around 40-41 degree Celsius. Being a coastal station, humidity remains high in Chennai. Therefore, feel-like temperature will be quite high.
Generally, Chennai remains extremely hot during the month of May. Respite from heat only comes when sharp showers for short duration are observed in the capital city. These showers are usually localized in nature.
