Chennai finally gears up for some good rains, putting an end to the prolonged dry spell over the city. These rains are much-needed as they are likely to bring relief from hot and humid weather conditions.

According to Skymet Weather, couple of troughs have developed around Tamil Nadu, which will eventually bring rain over the state capital.

At present, one trough is seen extending from Lakshadweep region to North Interior Karnataka, while another trough is seen extending over equator to South Tamil Nadu. Both the systems will be moving in northeast and north direction, respectively.

As these troughs move closer to Interior Tamil Nadu, rains will also start making appearance over Chennai March 3 onwards. The spell will be prolonged one and is likely to continue for at least 3-4 days. Although, intensity rains will be confined to light only.

In wake of these troughs, the sky has already become partly-cloudy. Not only this, mercury has also witnessed a marginal drop. On Monday, Chennai recorded day maximum of 30.9°C, while minimum temperature settled at 22.5°C. Both of temperatures were a degree below the normal average.

City has been witnessing dry weather conditions for the last many days. In fact, February remained practically dry.

February, March and April record least amount of rainfall with their monthly average rainfall standing at 2.2 mm, 4 mm and 7.7 mm, respectively.
